Is Hydrogen Water Good for You? A Plain Answer

By Clover & Young · 4 min read

Is hydrogen water good for you? The fair answer is maybe, and the research is still early. Hydrogen water is plain water with hydrogen gas dissolved in it. Small human trials have found modest changes in fatigue, stress scores and antioxidant capacity. They also found plenty that stayed the same. This page weighs both sides and asks whether hydrogen water is safe. It ends with a plain verdict on who it suits. All of it is research on molecular hydrogen, not on our product.

Is hydrogen water healthy? What the trials measured

Each trial below found something and missed something. A 2023 review pooled 19 studies and 402 healthy adults. Hydrogen lowered how hard exercise felt and lowered blood lactate, both by small amounts. It didn't improve VO2max or endurance. A 2020 trial gave 38 healthy adults 1.5 liters a day for four weeks. Antioxidant capacity rose more with hydrogen water in those aged 30 and over. The main oxidative-stress markers didn't differ. A 2021 pilot gave 40 adults aged 70 and over half a liter daily for six months. Chair-stand performance improved. Sleep, skin, cognition and quality of life showed no difference. The effects measured are small, the groups are small, and the question is open. For each benefit studied, see the hydrogen water benefits page.

Is hydrogen water safe to drink every day?

A glass of hydrogen water is water and hydrogen gas. It has no sugar, caffeine or calories. With a tablet, the glass also holds what the tablet leaves behind, mainly magnesium. That's the part to check. The US National Institutes of Health sets an upper limit for magnesium from supplements. For adults, it's 350 mg a day. One tablet has 40 mg, so add it to any magnesium you already take. The trials ran from one week to six months, and they were small. They say little about long-term use. Ask your doctor first if you're pregnant or nursing. Do the same if you take prescription medicines or are under a doctor's care. The full list is on the hydrogen water negative side effects page.

What goes into our tablets

Every trial above had people drink hydrogen water daily. A tablet is the simple way to keep that up, at home or away. Drop one Clover & Young tablet in 12 oz of water. In 90 to 120 seconds it makes 10+ PPM of molecular hydrogen from 40 mg of magnesium. Hydrogen is a gas and leaves open water once the glass is made. Drink it within a few minutes. Each tablet is sealed in its own blister pack. Hydrogen content is tested by H2 Analytics, an independent lab. The tablets are made in an FDA-registered, GMP-certified facility. They're vegan, non-GMO and gluten-free, in Wild Grape and Golden Citrus. A box of 30 is $29.95, and they're TSA-friendly. More on the format in our guide to H2 tablets.

Hydrogen water health: a plain verdict

The question What the record says
What studies found Small drops in perceived effort and blood lactate. Lower stress scores in 26 adults over four weeks. Higher antioxidant capacity in adults aged 30 and over.
What they did not find No gain in VO2max or endurance. No difference in the main oxidative-stress markers. No difference in sleep, skin or cognition in adults over 70.
How strong it is Small groups, one week to six months. Early research on molecular hydrogen, not on any one product.
Who it suits Adults who want a zero-sugar, zero-caffeine daily drink and will judge it by how they feel.
Who should ask first Anyone pregnant or nursing, on prescription medicines, or under a doctor's care.

If that sounds like you, try one glass a day for 90 days. If you don't feel the difference, we refund every dollar and you keep the tablets.
